Understanding Teary Eyes in Persians and Other Short-Nosed Cats

If you’ve ever owned a Persian or other short-nosed (brachycephalic) breed, you’ve probably noticed their adorable, flat faces come with a little quirk—teary eyes. While this might seem concerning at first, it’s actually quite normal for these breeds. In this article, we’ll explore why this happens, how to manage it, and why most kittens eventually outgrow it.

Why Do Persian and Short-Nosed Cats Have Teary Eyes?

The unique facial structure of breeds like Persians, Exotic Shorthairs, and British Shorthairs is a big part of their charm. However, their flat faces can make it difficult for their tears to drain properly. Instead of flowing down the tear ducts, tears often spill over, leading to the familiar teary-eyed look.

This is especially common in kittens. Their tear ducts are still developing, so you might notice more tear staining when they’re young. But don’t worry—most kittens grow out of this as they mature. As they get older, their tear ducts usually become more effective at draining excess tears, so the issue often lessens or even resolves completely.

Managing Teary Eyes: Keeping Your Cat Comfortable

Even though teary eyes are normal for these breeds, it’s still important to keep your cat comfortable and looking their best. Regular cleaning is key to preventing any irritation or staining around their eyes.

In the video I’ve attached, I demonstrate how to gently clean your cat’s eyes. I use a soft, damp cloth or a cotton pad to carefully wipe away the excess tears. It’s a quick and simple process that can make a big difference in your cat’s appearance and comfort.

After cleaning, I also show how to apply Envy tear-free powder. This powder helps keep the area around the eyes dry and clean for a longer time, reducing the need for frequent wiping. It’s a handy tool to have if you want to keep your cat looking fresh between cleanings.

The Good News: Kittens Often Outgrow Teary Eyes

One of the best things to know is that as your kitten grows into adulthood, the issue of teary eyes often becomes much less of a problem. As their facial structure fully develops, their tear ducts generally become better at draining tears efficiently. So, if you’re dealing with a particularly teary-eyed kitten, there’s a good chance they’ll outgrow it as they mature.

Teary eyes are a common and normal occurrence in breeds like Persians and other short-nosed cats. While it can be a bit of a nuisance, it’s usually nothing to worry about. With regular cleaning and a little help from products like Envy tear-free powder, you can keep your cat looking and feeling great. And remember, most kittens will outgrow this issue as they reach adulthood, so enjoy their cute, teary faces while they last—they’re just another part of what makes these breeds so special!
